Remarks: After spending the night at the rustic Madano-Zapata Buffalo Ranch, we decided to explore the diverse terrain of the San Luis Valley on foot. Millennia of high-winds sweeping across this valley and colliding with the dramatic Crestone Mountains have produced massive dunes exceeding 700 feet in elevation. Only the intense beauty of this micro-climate reminded me that I was, in fact, still standing in Colorado.
